How do you ensure the staff are qualified and do staff undergo a background check? All staff positions, even those staff who are returning to camp, must complete a yearly staff application and have 3 new references completed each year. All staff are then interviewed by the Camp Director and the leadership team and references are followed up on. Prior to being offered a position, a New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Sex Offender Registry check is conducted (this also includes the camp director, leadership team, and all volunteers).
To ensure that all staff are properly trained a week of staff training is conducted prior to the camp season beginning on the topics of: description of camp hazards, procedures for camper supervision and discipline, child abuse recognition and reporting, provisions for first aid and emergency medical assistance, buddy system, lost swimmer plan, lightning plan, fire safety and fire drills, camp evacuation procedures, and activity specific training. |
